25 Years On: still helping businesses get their marketing done

2026 marks 25 years since I branched out on my own to focus on helping businesses with their marketing. Or in other words, the Princess was rescued, we found the treasure, and killed the Ogre under the bridge (check out my ethos).

A quarter of a century ago, marketing and the internet were only just starting to co-exist. Marketing agencies often did one or the other, and ‘digital strategy’ wasn’t even a phrase anyone used. It was in this gap that the business now known as Blue Orange Marketing was born.

This year we celebrate 25 years trading, and I’m proud of the journey.

How it started

Back in 2001, the company began life as wearePR, founded by two colleagues and myself who’d grown tired of watching good ideas get lost in corporate red tape. The frustration was simple: organisations needed a joined-up approach to marketing and small businesses needed affordable marketing support.

In 2006, the business became Blue Orange Marketing – a new name, just me, but the same conviction that marketing should be planned, integrated and actually delivered.

What hasn’t changed

Twenty five years is a long time in any industry, let alone one that’s been reshaped by social media, search engines, and now AI. But the core of what I do has stayed consistent – acting as an outsourced marketing department for busy SMEs who don’t have the time, resources or in-house skills to keep their marketing moving.

Whether it’s PR and advertising, customer communications, or social media strategy, my approach has always been the same: a holistic plan rather than a scattergun one-off advert. It’s an approach that’s earned trust across sectors. Over the years I’ve been fortunate to work with public sector organisations, private businesses from engineering firms to golf clubs, and charities and not-for-profits. Most of that work has come through referrals – there’s no better measure of trust than that.

Staying in business for 25 years is about adapting without losing sight of what works. I’ve watched marketing trends come and go, embraced new tools (like AI), and kept my promise simple: making sure your marketing gets done.

I’m marking 25 years with the same thing I’ve always done – rolling up my sleeves and helping SMEs raise their profile, attract the right business, and stay in regular contact with their customers.
